An avid hunter and outdoorsman his entire life, Carlin Nordstrom
is a full member of the PoundMaker Cree Nation. After attending
Western Michigan University on a hockey scholarship and playing
professional for 5 years, Carlin decided to return to Northern
Saskatchewan to pursue his true passion... the hunt.
Chief PoundMaker, the Warrior of the land
Named for his skill at building and employing pounds used for
hunting buffalo, Chief PoundMaker (1842-1886) played a vital role
in the North West Rebellion of 1885. Unhappy with the results
of signing Treaty #6, he sought to negotiate his peoples' injustices
with the government to gain fair treatment and respect for his
people, rather then fight. However, when his efforts were ignored
he had no choice but to participate in the battle of Cut Knife
Hill.
Chief PoundMaker used his prestige among his
people to stop them from pursuing the defeated Canadians, thus
preventing greater loss of life. For this reason, when he was
tried he was sentenced to three years in prison, rather then being
hung. Chief PoundMaker later fell ill during incarceration, and
soon died after his release.
